Over the past decade, a carefully forged consensus has emerged to focus Long Island’s public and private resources on expanding high-paying “knowledge-based” industries.

This is NOT a done deal. The Las Vegas Sands company has proposed a multibillion-dollar casino at the current site of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - The Hub - in Nassau County, Long Island.
As of now, the Las Vegas Sands has yet to submit an application for their proposal, and there are several legislative steps—including zoning, traffic, and environmental studies—before their proposal can be approved.
There is also competition from other proposals for casinos in Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx to consider.
The questions are complex and require a more thoughtful approach to development.
From the threats it poses to local students, neighborhoods and the increased traffic and pollution, a casino at the Nassau Hub may not be the economic win some claim it to be.
Residents believe it's one thing to travel to a casino in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, but the prospect of living next to one is far from ideal.
Despite claims from pro-casino developers, a growing wealth of research suggests the economic gains from casinos are muddy and unclear.
Casinos may provide a short-term boost to local economies, but research shows casinos are not immune to larger economic forces, such as recession, changes in public preferences and may not be worth the investment.
